‎Instagram encrypted messages

‎Although Instagram’s End-to-End Encryption feature has been available for nearly 10 months now, I personally didn’t have access to it until recently. One of my friends already had this option, and when I noticed it today, I thought it was important to share it with you. The reason is simple — this is a very useful privacy feature that keeps our chats and personal messages fully secure.

‎With End-to-End Encryption, your conversations remain protected. This means that only you and the person you are chatting with can read the messages. No one else can access them.

‎Now let’s get straight to the point. I’ll show you how this works directly from my mobile phone screen.

‎As you can see on the screen, the first step is to open the Instagram chat section. Once you are inside the messages area, swipe slightly and you will start seeing an option for End-to-End Encrypted Chat.

‎When you tap on this option, you can easily turn it on or off depending on your preference.

‎For example, if I want to have a conversation with someone where absolutely no third person can read the messages, I can enable this feature. Instagram also offers something called Vanish Mode, which can be turned on for extra privacy. When Vanish Mode is enabled, messages disappear automatically after they are seen.

‎However, there is another situation to consider. Many people take chat backups, and sometimes someone may try to open those chats on another device. This is where the encrypted chat feature becomes extremely useful.

‎Let’s say I enable End-to-End Encryption and start a new chat with someone, for example a contact named Rocky. In this case, the previous chat history remains separate, while the new encrypted conversation opens in a completely separate chat thread.

‎This new chat will be fully encrypted.

‎The biggest advantage is that if my phone gets lost, or if I log into my Instagram account on another device, this encrypted conversation will not open there. It will only be accessible on my current device and the device of the person I am chatting with.

‎Even the backup for this encrypted chat is stored separately, while regular chats have their own backup.

‎So if you ever feel that a particular conversation needs to stay extremely private and secure, you can simply start an End-to-End Encrypted Chat with that person.

‎Generally, Instagram chats are already fairly secure because only the sender and receiver can read them. But there is always a small risk — if someone logs into your account on another device, they may still be able to read your messages.

‎With End-to-End Encryption, that risk is removed because the chat cannot be accessed on any other device.
