Red Magic Air –
The Indian smartphone landscape is shifting. While we have plenty of “all-rounders,” there’s a growing segment of gamers and power users craving something built specifically for them. We recently imported the Red Magic Air from China to see if this “dialed-down” version of the Pro model is the performance champion we’ve been waiting for.

At a converted price of approximately Rs 55,000, it sits in a competitive bracket. But does it deliver enough value to justify the import? Let’s dive into the details.

First Impressions

The packaging is surprisingly generous. Inside, you get a solid hard case (rare these days!), an 80W charger, and a signature red USB Type-C to Type-C cable.

The phone itself is a “glass and metal sandwich” that feels premium but surprisingly light. Despite housing a massive 7,000mAh battery and a physical cooling fan, it weighs in at 212g and stays relatively thin at 8mm. The weight balance is excellent, making it comfortable for long sessions.

Display: Truly Immersive

The display is easily one of the highlights. It’s a massive 6.85-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a blistering 144Hz refresh rate .

The Magic Touch: There is no punch-hole or notch. Thanks to the under-display camera, you get a seamless, edge-to-edge view with a staggering 95-96% screen-to-body ratio.

Protection: It’s built tough with Gorilla Glass 7i on the front and Gorilla Glass 5 on the back.

Performance: Breaking Records

Under the hood, this phone is a monster. It runs on the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. While most 8 Elite phones score around 3.1M on AnTuTu, the Red Magic Air pushed 3.4 to 3.5 million in our tests.

Combined with LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, the gaming experience is flawless:

BGMI: 90FPS (Stable)

COD Mobile: 120FPS

Real Racing 3: 144Hz

The Cooling Factor: It features a physical 24,000 RPM fan with RGB lighting. It keeps the internals cool, but be warned—after 45 minutes of heavy gaming, the high-pitched “whining” sound of the fan can become a bit irritating.

Hardware Features for Gamers

The Red Magic Air is packed with physical tools to give you an edge:

Shoulder Triggers: Highly responsive for FPS games.

Magic Key: A dedicated slider to instantly launch the “Game Space” dashboard.

AI Coaching: The software even provides real-time coaching for FPS games, suggesting where to hit.

The Compromises

To hit this price point and performance level, some things had to be sacrificed:

The Cameras: The rear 50MP and 70MP ultrawide sensors are “just okay.” However, the under-display selfie camera is disappointing; images lack detail and often look more like a painting than a photo due to heavy processing.

Software Polishing: Red Magic OS 11 feels a bit inconsistent. You’ll notice some QC issues in the UI (like weird capitalization) and a fair amount of pre-installed 3rd party apps on the Chinese variant.

Durability Rating: Because of the physical fan vents, it only has an IP54 rating. Don’t expect the high-level water resistance found on mainstream flagships.

Final Verdict: Should It Launch in India?

The Red Magic Air is a specialist device. It isn’t trying to beat the iPhone or Samsung at photography. Instead, it offers a world-class display, record-breaking performance, and a battery that simply won’t die.

If this launched in India at the Rs 50-60K mark, it would likely dominate the gaming niche. It’s a powerhouse for those who value performance above all else.
